Visa Requirements
Visa-Free Travel
If you originate in another EU or EEA country, you originate in the Schengen area and do not need a visa in Austria. Those countries are:
Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, Italy, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary.
Also, if you originate in one of the following non-EU countries, a visa will not be required:
Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland.
Although there are no visa requirements, you are obliged to carry travel documents (Passport or ID) with you at all times.
Several other countries are part of bi and multilateral agreements and thus subject to no required visa up to three months after entering Austria. Those countries are:
Albania, Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brasil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Guatemala, Honduras, Hongkong, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Canada, Croatia, Macau,Malaysia, Mauritius, Macedonia, Mexico, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Seychelles, Singapore, Saint Christopher and Nevis, South Korea, Taiwan, Uruguay, Venezuela, United States of America, Cyprus.
Schengen Visa (Type C)
All other visitors are strictly demanded to present a Schengen visa (also called Travel Visa or Tourist Visa C), that permits a visit of up to 90 days per 180 days.
Please take into consideration, that a visa can solely be requested at an Austrian Embassy or diplomatic representation or another Embassy of a Schengen Embassy in your country of residence. Your application should be initiated 3 months before your visit at the earliest, but not later than 3 weeks prior to your visit.
Your application requires, in addition to the completely filled application form, a valid passport (must be valid for at least 3 months longer, than your planned visiting period), a passport photo (35×44 mm) and a travel health insurance (minimum coverage of 30.000€).
You are furthermore demanded to give information regarding your purpose of journey (language course), your income and declaration of willingness of departure.
The fee for acquiring a Schengen visa is 60€.
Visa Type D
In case the duration of your course is more than 3 months, but 6 months at maximum, originating not from a member state of the EU/EEA, you are required to present a Visa Type D. This national visa allows you to enter and re-enter Austria several times and can be acquired at an Austrian Embassy or diplomatic representation or a Schengen Embassy in your country of residence. Your application should be initiated 3 months before your visit at the earliest, but not later than 3 weeks prior to your visit.
Your application requires, in addition to the completely filled application form, a valid passport (must be valid for at least 3 months longer, than your planned visiting period), a passport photo (35×44 mm).
You are furthermore demanded to give information regarding your income, your travel health insurance (minimum coverage of 30.000€) and your purpose of journey (language course).
Exception: If you are a Japanese citizen you are not required to present such a visa in Austria.
The fee for acquiring a Visa Type D is 100€.
Attention: There is no possibility of prolongation of such a visa in Austria.
If you are considering to stay longer than 6 months in Austria, you are required to apply for a Residence Permit.
